Our last full day in Viterbo. We will be leaving in the morning for places unknown, as we have a day and night to fill in before we can take up residence in Riomaggiore, as Edi has got back saying our room is occupied on the 24th so we can't shift our week back a day. We spent the whole morning going into areas we haven't been yet. A mix of churches, old neighbourhoods, and a visit to the city museum. The latter had a good range of Etruscan sarcophagi on the ground floor, displays of Roman and Etruscan bits and bobs on the 1st floor and old paintings on the top floor. Explanations also given in Braille, some paintings even had an acrylic raised version of them that presumably could be read by touch, although I couldn't interpret them at all well when I tried. Also a series of drawings of the multi-storey macchina that weighs 5 tons and is carried by 100 men to celebrate Santa Rosa . This year it is on 3 September, so we don't miss it by much. It must be really something to see.
Called into a pasticceria for some pastries for morning tea. What a good choice. Karen had a lovely flaky custard square thing, I had a chocolate-coated profiterole filled with delicious chocolate cream, and Sally has a wee mousse-filled tart topped with mixed red and black currants. All of them totally delicious, and we were sorely tempted to go back and have another round. And they only cost 2.40€ for the three. We are certainly able to live cheaply, despite the superb food.
Bought some dried berries (raspberry, strawberry and currants) from a roadside stall – a bit more expensive than we had counted on, but entirely our fault for asking for more! Ran out of options for lunch – there is quite a lot not open on a Sunday. We had intended to have lunch at Schenardi's – a cafĂ© on the main street that had been operating since 1815 – but they were not open, so compromised by getting a takeaway lasagne, eggplant and zucchini. Very tasty.
Rather tired by now as it is still very hot, and we'd been walking for quite some time, so back for a quiet afternoon reading and in Karen's case, working on the book. She has got right through the amount that Hannah has given us, which is good. The baby laptop is proving perfect, and has been in hot demand for this diary and Karen's work. Will be even better when we stay at places with an internet connection and we can use it to look up what to see and do.
Went out to find something for dinner. Struggled to find what we were after, though not sure of what that was, but ended up at an Italian takeaway near our studio. Had delicious creamy lasagne, roast eggplant and zucchini. Packed our bags to allow us a quick getaway.
